The FAILE & BAST Deluxx Fluxx Arcade invites guests to take a turn with the specially created and programmed video games and pinball machines or play a round of psychedelic foosball. The Miami installation marks the third edition of the Deluxx Fluxx experience. It was originally conceived as a one-off project in London in 2010 and then presented again in 2010 on New York City’s Lower East Side. FAILE and BAST aim to make art less sterile, more fun, and accessible to a broader audience creating a space that is “a magical wonderland of weirdness and art.” Harkening back to the golden age of arcade games, contemporary punks rock and graffiti culture, this neon-laden, interactive and DIY-feeling installation takes the form of a classic video arcade while exploring the tactile possibilities of the wooden cabinet as sculptural medium. Deluxx Fluxx challenges the contemporary art world’s fixation on ideas of relational aesthetics and democratization, and gives the audience a chance to genuinely engage with the work without feeling the pressure of the traditional gallery environment. The goal: Viewers will forget that they are looking at art, be captivated by the carnivalesque experience – and ultimately, by engaging with the installation, become an essential part of the art itself.
